Painting in Watercolor:
Easy Pinwheel Project
by Margaret Crowley-Kiggins, FWS

Introduction: This is a watercolor painting project easy and fun for the young artist or aesthetically challenged, as well as the advanced painter. It is and excellent way to experiment with watercolors and try various techniques without worrying about messing up anything or making something ugly, because you will always end up with a pretty pinwheel.

things for project

Here is a list of what you will need to begin: 6" square paper (stiff enough to take watercolor paint and some manipulation, but not so stiff that it resists bending) pencil with an eraser fine point permanent black marker ruler or straight edge watercolor paints, brush, water, and white crayon straight pin and 2 pretty plastic beads that will be used to hold the pinwheel in place on pin.

step one

Using the straight edge and pencil, make an "X" on the paper square by drawing lines from corner to opposite corner.

step two

Using the permanent marker, make a dot in the center of the "X" and draw lines from each corner towards the center, using the pencil guidelines, but only go about 2/3 of the way in.

step three

Paint both sides - try using the white crayon to do designs before you paint to see a cool "resist" technique.

step four

When your designs are finished and dry, use the scissors to clip the marker lines toward the center.

step five

Take the straight pin and place one bead on it.

step six

Using the beaded pin, poke every other tip of the painted square and then through the dot in the center.

step seven

Place the remaining bead on the pin, behind the pinwheel, and then poke the pin into the pencil eraser, being careful not to go all the way through (ouch!).

Now blow on it and see if it works... Make some more for all of your friends!
