Colors- Winsor & Newton

A History of Colors

1. Aureolin

Aureolin Yellow is a delicate transparent yellow.  It is excellent for mixing with other delicate colors such as Rose Madder Genuine.  It is not suitable for mixing with powerful staining colors such as Winsor Green, Winsor Blue, or Alizarin Crimson.  If it is painted too thickly then it has a leathery appearance.

2.  Cadmium Yellow Light

Cadmium Yellow Light is a light yellow and it is semi-opaque.   This color is best used mixing with one other of the cadmium colors or alone.   It is also good for mixing with any of the greens on the palette.

5.  Alizarin Crimson

Alizarin Crimson is a deep bluish red and although it is transparent, it is a staining color.  That means that it stains the paper.  It is best used with other strong colors such as French Ultramarine Blue (for a lovely purple) or Winsor Green (for a series of rich blacks).

5a.  Alizarin Crimson plus Winsor Green

Alizarin Crimson is a deep bluish red and although it is transparent, it is a staining color.  Winsor Green is a deep pthalo green which should never be used by itself, but is an excellent mixing color.  In this mixture I have created a very dark black.

6.  Cadmium Red Deep

Cadmium Red Deep is a semi-opaque red.  Although it tends to be a little warm, it is almost a true red.   It is strong and extremely lightfast.  Because it is semi-opaque it is best mixed with only one other color.  A hint of this color mixed with French Ultramarine Blue will create a nice dark navy blue.

Cadmium Red Light is a semi-opaque orange-red.  It is warm and will mix vibrant shades of orange.   Because it is semi-opaque it is best mixed with only one other color.

8.  Rose Madder Genuine

Rose Madder Genuine is a very delicate transparent red.  It tends to be a little cool so it mixes duller oranges.  This is a wonderful color to use when mixing skin tones because its transparency.  To my knowledge, Winsor and Newton are the only makers of this lovely color.  It only moderately lightfast.

9.  Light Red

Light Red is a semi-opaque earthy red.  It also goes by the name of English Red.  This color is a nice mixing color and produces unusual results.  It is more transparent than the cadmium colors so it mixes well with other colors.   This color tends to be warm.

10.  Indian Red

Indian Red is an opaque cool earthy red.  It is a good mixing color but only with transparent colors because it is too opaque to yield anything but mud if you mix it with other opaque colors.

11.  Winsor Blue

Winsor Blue is a transparent blue.  It is a very intense staining color.  It should only be used for mixing with other colors and only in small amounts because it is so intense.  It tends to be warm, although I recently noted that Winsor and Newton now manufactures a warm and a cool Winsor Blue.  It is also called Pthalo Blue.

14.  Cerulean Blue

Cerulean Blue is an opaque light blue color.  It is also good for skies.  It has a tendency to have a granular effect on the paper so it is not the color to use if you want a smooth even wash.

16.  Viridian

Viridian is a vvery transparent green.  It tends to be cool so you can mix some lovely silvery greys by adding Rose Madder Genuine.  It also is a lovely color to mix with Cobalt Blue to make crystal clear turquoise ocean colors.  You can make a nice transparent olive green by adding a hint of Cadmium Orange.  This is a very versatile color.

18.   Hookers Green

Hookers Green is a mix of many other greens and each manufacturer's version is a little different.  I primarily use this to enhance landscape colors.  I usually mix yellow, orange, or red with it to get my dark greenish shadows.
